Individual reflection (Day 2)
What did you do today?
Today we learned how to use equipment that is called a
‘oven’ that calculates the amount of substances in a mixture and also we were
introduced to different machinery like one which sucks carbon dioxide from the
air and also a machine that can change liquid into powder form then later we
went to use the ‘oven’ to test the solution how much ethanol it contains which
took about four minutes to finish computing and calculate. Then we had a challenge,
which is to get 70% of the 200ml solution to be Ethanol.
What did you lean today?
For today, I have learnt that as the heat increases, there
is more energy that breaks the hydrogen bond and allowing the water vapor to
escape during when water is being heated. Also, the breaking of the bonds takes
up the heat energy given. Then when using the ‘oven’, there is a long tube in
the oven it has a coating which somewhat attracts ethanol and repels water as
we were supposed to separate water and ethanol. Then, Helium is used to blow
the mixture along the tube then in the end, water will come out first, methanol
that is a poison that can cause blindness when eaten and finally, the final
substance that comes out of the tube would be the ethanol.
How do you feel about today’s activities?
The feel that today’s activities has taught me more in depth
and more about the machinery that use the method distillation and that I can
now know what machinery industrial. Then I also had fun as the activities we
done were interesting and that we had a chance to get to try out the
equipment/machinery/technology, which is a big life experience, and I would
apply my skill in my future endeavors.
